Gemstones -- Tourmaline
Tourmalines can be considered
the most exciting gemstone group. Tourmalines come in the greatest
range of dazzling hues of all the gemstone species, including
bicolor varieties such as the Watermelon Tourmaline, that displays
the green of the rind and the pink of the watermelon fruit,
all within the stone. Tourmaline was named for the Sinhalese
word “toromalli” representing the mixed and multicolored
stones found in the gem gravels of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). They
are mined throughout the world, including Brazil, the United
States, Africa, and Asia. Some of the best known and sought
after Tourmaline colors include rich blue greens and green blues,
a multitude of shades of pink and red, vivid yellows, and the
rare Paraiba hot turquoise gemstone from Brazil. Tourmalines
tend to be cut and faceted in a wider array of shapes than most
other gemstones, in order to showcase their full color potential.
Most typical is an elongated rectangle. Tourmaline crystals
are so unique and beautiful that many collectors put more value
into the uncut crystal, in the exact form it had been extracted
from the earth, instead of choosing to facet the material into
jewelry ready stones. The rich and diverse colors of tourmaline
are remarkable, and create wonderful opportunities to showcase
one of a kind, eye-catching jewelry.
